“Crimson Moon” is made of felted wool, flax and silk fibers. I first lay the fibers into a design, then add soapy water and slowly roll it in a bamboo mat hundreds of times until the fibers lock together (wet felting). After letting the felt dry, I dry needle felt the edges of the design with a special barbed needle, to puff them up for a 3D effect. Eventually, I freeform machine stitch and add embroidery to give the painting even more texture and dimension.
This 8×10 felt is double matted and mounted in an 12×15 brown, reclaimed (slight imperfections are part of the reclaimed effect) wood frame. I remove the glass fronts from all of my paintings, as I believe part of the fiber art experience is having direct access to its rich textures. Wool is naturally water-resistant; fire-resistant; mould/mildew-resistant; and antibacterial.
