“Flight; 4” is the fourth painting in a series of flying creatures made of felted wool and silk. I first lay out wool into a design, then add soapy water and slowly roll it in a bamboo mat hundreds of times until the wool and silk fibers lock together (wet felting). After letting the felt dry, I needle felt the edges of the design with a special barbed needle, to puff them up for a 3D effect. Eventually, I freeform machine stitch and add embroidery to give the painting even more texture and dimension.
This 5”×7” painting is mounted in an 8.5”×10.5”×1” (reclaimed) white, wood frame. I remove the glass fronts from all of my paintings, as I believe part of the experience is having direct access to their rich textures. Wool is naturally water-resistant; fire-resistant; mould/mildew-resistant; and antibacterial.
