“Little House; Two” is the second painting in a series of magical homes made of felted wool. I first lay out fibers into a design, then add soapy water and slowly roll it in a bamboo mat hundreds of times until the wool fibers lock together (wet felting). After letting the felt dry, I needle felt the edges of the design with a special barbed needle, to puff them up for a 3D effect. Finally, I add embroidery to give the painting even more texture and dimension.
This 5”×7” painting is mounted in an 7.5”× 9.5” wood frame, ribbed with a gold wax. I remove the glass fronts from all of my paintings, as I believe part of the experience is having direct access to their rich textures. Wool is naturally water-resistant; fire-resistant; mould/mildew-resistant; and antibacterial.
