“Gladiolas” was created by first laying out colorful wool and silk fibers on a wool base, then wet felting (saturate with soap-water and roll in a bamboo mat approx. 900 rotations). After drying, I needle felt the design to further enhance dimension, then freeform machine stitch and embroider for added interest and texture. “Gladiolas” is approx. 23×33” mounted in wood frame, as shown.
I remove the glass fronts from my paintings, as I believe part of the experience is having direct access to their rich textures. Touching the painting (gently with clean hands) is part of the joy! Wool is naturally water-resistant, fire-resistant mould- and mildew-resistant and antibacterial. You may occasionally dab lightly with a drop of lavender oil to repel insects, if desired.
